Alzarri Joseph Survives Run Out Due To No Appeal: The second T20I of the three-match series between West Indies and Australia was a rather one-sided match as the Aussies won by 34 runs after putting up a mammoth 241-run total. But another interesting story has emerged from this match, one that has nothing to do with its result.
In what can only be described as a display of one of the more absurd rules of cricket, West Indian player Alzarri Joseph was ran out, but survived the ordeal as no Australian player appealed for it.
In the third ball of the 19th over 52 runs were still required to win for the Windes. Alzarri Joseph drove Spencer Johnson’s ball straight to Mitchell Marsh, who threw the ball back to the bowler. Johnson does dislodge the bails but does not appeal as it looked like a close call.
Further replays show that Joseph in fact did not make it to the crease and should’ve been given out. When the Australian players started celebrating following the replay shown on the big screen, on-field umpire Gerard Abood explained that Alzarri was not out as no one appealed for his dismissal.

In what can only be described as the umpire being hounded by Kangaroos, Tim David claimed that he did appeal for the run-out. He also described the situation as ridiculous multiple times. Veteran opener David Warner was also heard saying that it was an “umpire error.”
When the Australians tried to dissuade the umpire’s decision, Gerard Abood suggested the players to “Get on with the game,” and that they were getting into “very poor territory.”
In the MCC’s Laws of Cricket, law 31.3 about the timing of appeals states – “For an appeal to be valid, it must be made before the bowler begins his/her run-up or, if there is no run-up, his/her bowling action to deliver the next ball, and before Time has been called.”
Spencer Johnson, or any other player around the umpire did not seem to make the appeal until a replay was shown on the big screen.
It’s not like this decision changed the course of the match. West Indies were 7 down with over 50 runs required in the 19th over. They did end up losing the match by a fairly big margin of 34 runs.
